A complex, savory Pinot Noir with loads of spiced cherry and red currant fruits as well as brambly herbs, underbrush, and leather-like aromas and flavors. It is very focused on the palate, in a tight, racy style. It has tremendous aging potential.
Knox is a blend of our two “estate” vineyards, Bien Nacido and Le Bon Climat. Both vineyards are in the Santa Maria Valley, with Le Bon Climat being located on the southern edge of this appellation. Le Bon Climat was planted in 1998 with low vigor rootstock in some well drained poor soil. This combination of low vigor plants and poor soil limit the crop size and slow ripening.
All our wines are made in small lots. Several high end lots were blended to create the 2018 Knox; three of these lots contained a high percentage of whole clusters. Twenty percent of the final blend was fermented with whole cluster. The whole cluster influence is evident by the a spicey note of anise and clove mixed with a smell of fresh green tea. Twenty-two months age in French oak barrels gives the wine aromas of bitter chocolate and vanilla. The clarity and color of the wine are beautiful.
Pairs well with beef, veal, deer, venison, and poultry dishes.
